Ice Maker Repair

Clear-ice and standard Sub-Zero ice makers producing hollow cubes, frozen blocks, off-tasting ice or nothing at all.

Hands drawing a half-full ice bin out from under the ice-maker head of a built-in stainless column

What people describe when they call

  • Cubes come out hollow and about half the size they used to be.
  • The bin fills with one frozen block instead of loose cubes.
  • No ice for two days, though the water dispenser still runs fine.
  • The ice tastes of the freezer and the cubes look milky rather than clear.

What it costs

The bands we quote from

Parts and the labour to fit them, grouped the way the faults actually arrive. Your job lands inside one of these six before anyone opens a toolbag.

Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.

Whichever band the fault falls in, you get one firm number from inside that range, agreed with you before any work starts — and the service call comes off it the moment you say go.

Door gasket or seal replacement
$270–$620
Evaporator or condenser fan motor
$340–$700
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor
$290–$690
Ice maker, water valve or supply line
$270–$790
Electronic control board
$420–$880
Compressor or sealed-system repair
$1,300–$3,270

These are ranges rather than starting prices — what moves inside one is the part itself and how far the unit has to come out of its cabinetry. For scale, a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work, runs $12,110–$21,200. That is the comparison worth making before you decide either way.

  • Two days with no ice, though the water dispenser ran fine. The recirculating pump had given out on the clear-ice side, and he was upfront that it comes from a supplier — so we waited a week for ice.

  • Cubes came out milky and tasted of whatever sat beside them. He flushed the reservoir, changed the filter and cleaned scale off the mold. Clear ice again, tasting of nothing, which is the point.

  • Hollow cubes for the best part of a year, so we had stopped using the bin. It was the inlet valve, not the module, and he said so plainly. Full-size cubes again, first visit.
