Short answer
Working lights prove the unit has power, not that its control is telling the compressors to run. Read the display first: OFF, or ordinary numbers while the shelves are warm, points to a setting rather than a failure. Sub-Zero Repair Edmonds tests the control and compressors for the $89 service call: (206) 210-3547.
Light and cold need different things
Lights on tell you the unit is getting power. Cold needs more: the control has to call for it, power has to reach each compressor (the pump that moves the refrigerant), and the compressor has to start.
Read the display, then give it half an hour
- OFF. The cooling was switched off at the panel, by a key rather than a fault.
- Ordinary numbers, warm shelves. Sub-Zero’s troubleshooting material names showroom mode, a demonstration setting for units on a dealer’s floor, as one cause of a unit that looks normal yet runs warm.
- Silence that has just begun. An older Sub-Zero owner’s guide says a unit that has stopped may be defrosting, and to wait 30 minutes to see whether it restarts.
When it still will not start
Then the cause is inside. Sub-Zero’s service manual checks whether the control board is sending power to the compressors. On a unit with one compressor, a failed start part or the compressor itself gives the same silence; with two, both refusing together points back at the control. A steady hum with no cold is a different question: something is running, but the cold is not reaching the shelves.
What it may cost
$89 to find out — the visit and the diagnosis, taken off the repair if you go ahead.
- Electronic control board Shows as a lit display and working lights while nothing calls the compressor on $420–$880
A unit left switched off or in showroom mode needs no part. A failed compressor is priced from the sealed-system range.
Ranges, not starting prices. The technician names one figure inside the band before any panel comes off, and Sub-Zero Repair Edmonds holds to it.
Wait or call today?
Can wait until morning
- The display reads OFF: switch it back on at the panel and keep the doors shut for a few hours.
- The base went quiet less than half an hour ago, so it may still be defrosting.
Call today if
- Half an hour has gone by, the base is silent and the fridge thermometer is climbing toward 40°F.
- The display shows normal figures but a thermometer on a shelf reads well above them.
Anything in the second card is a reason to phone Sub-Zero Repair Edmonds on (206) 210-3547 today rather than tomorrow.
Questions people ask next
If the lights work, can the fault still be electrical?
Yes. The lights show that power reaches the unit, not that it reaches the compressors. Sub-Zero's service manual tests the control board's output to each compressor, and a start part or a wire can break the path further along. Sub-Zero Repair Edmonds traces it for the $89 service call; call (206) 210-3547.
Should I turn it off at the breaker to reset it?
Once, after the half hour has passed, is reasonable: breaker off, back on, then watch the display. If it still will not cool, leave the power on and stop there rather than cycling it again and again, so the technician sees how it behaves and the food is not warming between attempts.
